Abstract
Proverbs are an important part of language, the essence of language art, sum up the work practice and life experience of human beings, reflect people's lives and ideas. Its sentence is more complete words, is the oral circulation of familiar words, simple and popular reflects the profound truth. Its vivid language is mainly expressed by comparing the choice of vocabulary, the use of equidistant syntactic and the metaphorical rhetoric. English and Chinese proverbs have greatly enriched the language and culture. From the view of language, although English and Chinese are two distinct languages, but they have some of same language characteristics, they have the role of symbolic image, both have a strong spoken language and distinct national characteristics. They are beautifully structure, rhythmic and harmonious, reflect different values and cultural connotations. Due to the differences in geographical environment, historical development, religious beliefs, living customs and so on, English and Chinese proverbs reflect different national cultural characteristics.
This paper analyzes the linguistic characteristics, commonalities and differences of Chinese and English proverbs and language characteristics by means of comparative research.
