Abstract
The age of innocence is Edith Wharton’s masterpiece which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1921. The novel is set in the New York upper classes between the 1870s and 1880s, it describes the emotional entanglement between Newland Archer, May Welland and Ellen Olenska. Upon close examination, this novel showed the characteristics of female characters in the traditional patriarchal society 19th century. This paper from analyze Ellen's background, life experience and behavior to understand her character. And the influence to her life and upper society about her character. This paper consists of three parts. The first part introduces Edith Wharton and The Age of Innocence. Including the introduction of the author's background and life experience, as well as the creation background and summary plot of the novel. The second part mainly introduces the background and life experience of Ellen. The third part analyzes Ellen's characters. Including Ellen's image construction, Ellen's discourse analysis and Ellen's pursuit.Finally, to summarizes the character characteristics of Ellen and the practical significance of the expression.
