Abstract
The color word is a branch of the language and is a mirror reflecting the language and culture.The number of basic color words in both languages is roughly the same. English and Chinese belong to two distinct language families, rooted in two different cultural systems, reflecting the different cultural psychology and aesthetic taste of English and Chinese people. The cultural connotations given by Chinese and Western color words are also different. Cai Yun (2006) analyzed the three meanings of red, white, and black in terms of associative meaning, symbolic meaning, and semantic meaning in Chinese and British and American cultures. Liu Xiaohui(2008) researched in English and Chinese words and showed that color are very rich, but their cultural connotations often have different characteristics. The difference in the symbolic meaning of colors between different cultures is due to the cultural and historical background of their respective nation . Scholars discuss the deep cultural connotation of color words initially, so that non-native English speakers can master the English culture, in order to better understand the differences between cultures of various nationalities, and avoid misunderstandings in cross-cultural communication.Xiaomin (2020) argued color words are used to describe the external color characteristics of things, and they often appear in our lives. We not only use it to describe the external image of objects, but also use it to express internal psychological feelings. Different national languages give completely different cultural meanings to color words, and the translation methods of color words are also worth exploring. Firstly, the composition of Chinese and English color words is introduced and their characteristics are compared. Then the author will discuss the three different translation skills in the third section. In the end, it will summarize the color words’ translation difficulties and the means.
