Abstract
Translation refers to conveying the meaning in one language to another language, to communicate thoughts and emotions, spread cultural knowledge, and promote social civilization, especially promote the prosperity of the translated language culture. Translation has to do three difficult things:to be faithful,expressive,and elegant.It is difficult enough to be faithful to the original,and yet if a translation is not expressive.it is tantamount to having no translation.Hence expressiveness should be required too.
The idiom is like a bright pearl in the temple of literature, which radiating a long-lasting light. Language is the carrier of culture, and idioms are the essence of language. Both English and Chinese languages with a long history and each contains different idioms. Since the common social activities and the mental thinking process of human beings have many things in common, there are also similarities between English and Chinese proverbs. Idiom refers to a language in its long-term use and practice. It is a hard working people refined and summarized in a fixed form of phrases or short sentences, It’s the crystallization of the working people's wisdom. It covers a wide range, usually including Proverbs, idioms, aphorisms, allusions, colloquialisms, slang, etc. Due to differences in geography, history, cultural background and customs, when we translate English and Chinese idioms we must not only maintaining the faithfulness of the original text, but also maintain the idiom's figurative form, rich association, rhetorical effect and other national and local characteristics.
