Abstract
This paper is a study on application of phonics to the junior first grade students in vocabulary teaching. There are some problems in junior high school students' English learning, such as fear of spelling English words, afraid of memorize words, not being able to remember words well. The main reasons for these problems are that teachers do not attach importance to phonics, the teaching style is too rigid; and students lack confidence, their thoughts are rigid. Through the analysis of phonics, this paper proposes that natural spelling should be introduced into junior middle school English vocabulary teaching, so as to improve the junior middle school students’ English spelling ability. The research questions are as follows: 1. Can phonics improve the interest in learning English of the students in the first grade of middle school? 2. Can phonics improve the spelling and reading ability of the students in the first grade of middle school? The research subjects of this study are the students in the first grade of middle school from a institution of Wangshi phonics English in Changchun, to have 16 weeks of natural spelling training. Through classroom observations, questionnaires, interviews, and tests to understand whether students’ interest in English learning has changed. The results show that: the learning phonics makes it easier for them to remember words and also makes students more interested in English learning.
