Abstract
With the development of globalization, translation plays a significant role in cultural integration. Many foreign classics have been translated into Chinese and are very popular among Chinese readers. A good translation can not only reproduce the effect of the original text, but also bring readers spiritual enjoyment and life inspiration. In recent years, readers' taste of the translation is getting higher and higher. we need to find a better way exploring the literary translation methods to satisfy readers.
This paper is aiming to explore Newmark's translation theory applied in literary translation through analyzing and comparing the two translations of The Painted Veil by Yu dawei and Liu yongquan as the research object.
The Painted Veil is one of the popular novels of William Somerset Maugham. The novel is actually a book of female spiritual awakening. It narrates a story about a beautiful young lady who married a man she doesn’t love only because of family pressure and vanity, soon she had a love affair with a married man and caught by her husband, which put her in a tragedy situation. The author reckons that this novel is educative and instructive for all girls when making choice in marriage.
