Abstract
In 1726, Gulliver’s Travels was first published and was all sold out in one week. Till now, it has passed several centuries after its first appearance and it is translated in decades of languages. People all over the world are reading it. In China, it is very popular and has been listed into books which the new curriculum standards require junior high school students to read. According to the novel, Jonathan Swift describes a fantastic travel story in which the protagonist Gulliver experiences a lot strange and absurd things and meets lots of strange people and animals. Swift enriches the work’s morality by using humor, reveals absurd by means of satire, and makes the incredible things to be reality according to characters and narrative framework. Since Gulliver’s Travels’ published, it has been learned by many scholars for hundreds of years from different aspects. Based on the previous studies, this thesis explores the writing techniques of Gulliver’s travels from the aspects of literature and language according to analyzing its narrative methods, rhetoric and language.
