Abstract
Language is the bearer of culture, and idioms are heavily culturally loaded phrases and sentences. Idioms are the essence of language as they carry distinctive culture features. To translate English idioms involves obstacles, as Chinese idioms and English idioms carry different features. Each idiom bears and image and a figurative meaning, which is exactly what the writer and speaker wants to express. Exact equivalence in the translation of idioms is very hard to achieve. When an idiom is being translated, it’s a basic requirement that its figurative meaning should be remained. Guided by this principle, this article explores the methods of how to translate idioms. According to the different recourses and characteristics of idioms, we should properly adopts six methods on how to translate idioms by giving exact examples. This research had great significance in handing well idioms in translation and cross-culture communication.
