Abstract
Understanding of the importance of body language in the classroom, has become a vastly talked about subject and I will discuss its use in the modern classroom. Firstly, there are many who believe body language plays an important role in how students react to the teacher and how their behavior can be affected during the class. Many believe the student pay more attention to our body language, than they do our words. This topic is broken down into three main points, gestures, signals and non-verbal communication, all important factors to be aware of whilst teaching students at this level. So in the view of this, we must all, as teachers, be aware of how we conduct ourselves in the classroom, both verbally and though our body language. Research suggests that nonverbal communication plays an important role in second language communicative competence, yet little attention has been given to practical teaching techniques that will help English language teachers incorporate this essential element into their classrooms. This article begins by examining the indispensable role of body language in the English teaching classroom in the overall communicative process. It considers the interplay of body language, particularly gesture, facial expression and behaviour, among interlocutors and gives special consideration to the second language learner and the obstacles that can be encountered in communicating. Subsequently, specific activities that bring the visual and auditory channels together through video, drama and role play are shared with the purpose of stimulating teachers’ creativity in producing their own classroom activities to raise students’ awareness of how to encode and decode the visual as well as auditory cues in communicative exchanges.
