Abstract
The Old Man and the Sea is Hemingway's masterpiece. Santiago is the main character of The Old Man and the Sea. This thesis describes the character of Santiago. He is strong in will, kind in heart, and rational in thought. And deeply discussed his character causes. The formation of human character is closely related to the environment. Santiago's character was formed in his struggle with nature. This article analyzes the living environment and interpersonal relationships of Santiago, and combines Hemingway's family background to explain Santiago's character.The Old Man and the Sea portrays the most true portrayal of Hemingway's life. Hemingway has always been pursuing an eternal thing, that is, the perseverance of human character, tenacious spirit. As Hemingway said, "I have read it many times. Every time I read it, I get more, as if I finally got what I wanted from my hard work." Hemingway's ability to write such philosophical works at such a time is not only a portrayal of the spirit, but also a desire of the heart. He hoped that everything would be fine, but life was not. The road of life is long and full of ups and downs, but as long as you can be as brave and tenacious as Santiago to meet the challenge with a confident heart, will become the winner of life.It expresses the spirit that people can be destroyed, but they can not be defeated.
