Abstract
Phonics aims to cultivate students’ ability to read when meeting new words and to write when hearing the words through the establishment of corresponding relationship between English letters or letter combinations and the pronunciation. A large number of studies have shown that in vocabulary teaching of the primary school English, the phonics teachers can help students establish an inner link between sound and form of words, which improves pupils’ accurate spelling-out of words and vocabulary memory. Literature retrieva l shows, however, researches about how to effectively apply phonics method on English vocabulary teaching of primary schools are insufficient, especially the action research reports. Therefore, this paper reports an action research of phonics in author’s class as a case study to provide enlightenments for optimizing English spelling teaching in the primary school.
