Abstract
Jerome Salinger is an outstanding novelist in the history of modern American literature. In his novel the catcher in the rye, David Salinger vividly portrayed the rebellious anti-hero young Holden. In this novel, through Holden's image, the author shows us the contradiction between the rich material world and the poor spiritual world of a young American after World War II, which is obvious in Holden's body. This paper discusses Holden's character, the social causes and the enlightenment to us. Holden, the hero of the novel, hates the hypocrisy of the real world and tries to escape, but he fails due to his own character and eventually breaks down in spirit. At the end of the story, the hero wants to be a catcher in the wheat field to protect the innocent children from the destruction of reality.
