Abstract
Idioms are important, peculiar and indispensable part of a language. In the English language, idioms also occupied an important position, since it is the crystallization of the national language and culture. Translation of idioms is one of the focuses of English translation. Language structure is stable, concise, vivid image, it is the people in the process of labor and understanding of the crystallization of the world, they are mainly derived from life. In addition, it also comes from myths and historical allusions. They are the essence of language, as well as the cultural characteristics and cultural information of different ethnic groups. (Christiane N.1991, 5) consequently, being heavily loaded with cultural elements, idioms best reflect the culture of a nation. Due to having strong national characteristic as well as specific linguistic features, they bring about difficulties in translation. This paper summarizes the translation methods of English idioms on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of English idioms, and thus enhancing the effectiveness of cultural communication.
