Abstract
Followed by the increase of international communication in medical field, domestic medical staff and medical institutions have began to learn advanced technology and medical experience abroad by reading a large number of foreign medical literature. However, those medical literature are mainly written in English. So how to translate medical English and understand the medical information is very important, especially for domestic medical staff and medical institutions. It is a common focus for medical translators and researchers to find out how to better realize the communicative function of medical translation and what translation theory can be applied to medical translation. That’s also the primary concern of this thesis.
As an important type of pragmatic text, medical English is rather practical. It has utilitarian purpose. It is different from literary style and its linguistic feature and content are for transferring information, which makes it informative. Based on the function characteristic in medical information, the most applicable theory that can provide theoretical guidance to medical translation is the SkoposTheory. This thesis analyzes the characteristics of medical English from linguistic and stylistic features and the principles of SkoposTheory. Then with the guidance of principles and rules of SkoposTheory, the corresponding effective strategy should be applied in medical translation.
