Abstract
There are indeed numerous weak schools in different parts of China, including Zhejiang. Facing the challenge of the new National Matriculation English Test (NMET), it is obviously not easy for the students in weak schools in Zhejiang to overcome the difficulty and pass though the test, as the changes mean it is tougher for them to get good grades. To get better grades, reading is a necessity for them to acquire. However, there are a series of problems existing in English reading teaching in these weak schools. There are also English reading teaching methods and suggestions in different studies to weak schools. To find out whether these methods and suggestions are suitable or not, a semi-interview based study was carried out in Quzhou Senior High School, which is a weak school in Zhejiang, facing the new NMET. Students from both Grade One and Two were selected from different English levels. They each attended ten lessons and then were interviewed after each lesson. Through the feelings and expressions of the students, it can be concluded that most English reading teaching suggestions and methods are effective and reading for writing with materials from English novels plays an important part in meeting the challenge of the new NMET.
