Abstract
Along with the development of the global economic integration, the phenomenon of cultural convergence has become more and more obvious. Reading is an important part of learning a second language. To learn English well learners should improve English reading ability. However, many true and serious reading barriers are not only from the proficiency of language knowledge itself, but also caused by cultural differences between target language and our mother tongue. Cultural differences exist in background information, words, sentences, and text structures, all of which are going to cause potential barriers in reading. Only by finding a feasible way to remove the barriers can we improve our reading ability. This paper enumerates some of the phenomena that Chinese and Western cultural differences affect reading, and then analyzes the causes of cultural differences, and finally develops some tentative methods to help to improve reading comprehension.
