Abstract
The Painted Veil is one of the popular novels by William somerset Maugham, an British novelist. This novel is actually a book of female spiritual awakening. It narrates a story about a beautiful women who married a man she doesn’t love only because of family pressure and vanity. Soon she fall in love with a playboy and get caught by her husband, which put her in a tragedy situation. The author thinks that this novel is educative and instructive for those who are facing this kind of problem. In a romantic relationship, usually girls are easily lost their minds, who will regard the man as the whole world to them and even think they can’t live without him, which is harmful for a relationship putting too much attention on someone.
There are many translations of The Painted Veil. Based on readers' comments, the author selects the translation of Yu dawei and Liu yongquan as the research object, analyzes and compares the two translations of Yu and Liu, aiming to explore the communicative translation of Newmark's theory applied in literary translation.
