Michael Cunningham is a famous female writer in American literature world. The hours has been widely praised by literary critics since it was published in 1998 and won the Pulitzer Prize and PEN/faulkner Award. The Hours was one of the representative works of American writer Michael Cunningham. The Hours connects three different females, Virginia, Laura and Clarissa, and highlights their struggle in the whirlpool of pain under the awakening of self-consciousness, and their tenacious struggle and efforts against their tragic fate in order to realize their self-value, which reflects the path of women's self-cognition. This paper reveals the self-pursuit and exploration of modern women by interpreting three female images in the novel. By interpreting these female images, this paper analyzes their process from initial awakening of female consciousness and breakthrough of the barriers in patriarchal system to the realization of self-value, which is beneficial to understand feminism, arouse people's thinking on women's issues and continue fighting for the female's real liberation.
