Abstract
Translation refers to conveying the meaning in one native language to another foreign language, to communicate thoughts and emotions, spread cultural knowledge, and promote social civilization, especially promote the prosperity of the translated language culture. To translation text well it has three difficult principle:to be faithful,expressive,and elegant.It is difficult enough to be faithful to the original,and yet if a translation is not expressive. It is tantamount to having no translation. That’s why expressiveness should be required too.
The idiom is like a bright pearl in the temple of literature. This bright pearl radiating a long-lasting light, which shining upon the mankind’s history. Language carriers the culture, and idioms are the innate character of language. No matter English or the Chinese languages, which has a long time history. That makes tons of different idioms. Idiom refers to a language in its long-term use and practice. No matter Chinese idioms or English idioms, it all combine by hard working people’s daily life values and wisdom. They sum up fixed form phrases or short sentences, which covered a wide range, usually including proverbs, idioms, aphorisms, allusions, colloquialisms, slang, etc. Due to Chinese and English have differences in geography, history, cultural background and customs, when we translate English and Chinese idioms we must not only maintaining the faithfulness of the original text, but also maintain the idiom's figurative form, rich association, rhetorical effect and other national and local characteristics.
