ABSTRACT
Western feminist translation was produced by feminism and translation studies. Being a portion of western feminist translation, interventionist feminist translation reflects ways that feminist translators have used to intervene into the new meaning in the target source. In practice, feminist translation takes pains to encourage a kind of interventionist translation, making a feminist creation in the translation field. Feminist translators adopt a variety of ways as the actual means of intervention in order to win the lawsuit of and to make their identities visible. The specific strategies employed are as follows: supplementing, prefacing and footnoting, and “hijacking”, and other strategies.
This paper first introduces feminism, feminist translation both in the West and China as well as the interventionist feminist translation strategies. Then the interventionst strategies which are used by the translator and concrete examples will be analyzed from these aspects: prefacing, footnoting, translator’s signature and supplementing. This thesis tries to study the interventionism in the translation of Orlando—A Biography, by contrasting both the English and Chinese versions, illustrating the instances of the translator’s intervention, discussing the inner factors resulting in her intervention, and summarizing her practical interventionisit strategies . A conclusion will be drawn in the last chapter.
