摘 要
文化的发展需要兼容不同民族的文化，语言的发展同样需要融合不同民族的语言，英语借用汉语现象是这种语言、文化需求的必然产物。从这一意义上看，英语借用汉语词语实质上借的是中国文化。本文首先结合前人对借词的研究总结出文化和语言的关系就是内容和形式的关系。然后将英语借用汉语词语现象置于中西文化交流的背景下分四个时期来探讨中国文化对西方文化的影响，即17世纪初以前、17世纪初期至19世纪初期、19世纪中期至20世纪初期、20世纪初至现在。最后阐述中国发达的历史文化和英国民族的包容性是英语借用汉语词语的文化成因。

ABSTRACT
Compatibility of cultures and languages in different races is necessary to the development of culture and language, resulting in the Chinese borrowings in English consequentially. In this sense, Chinese borrowings in English are Chinese culture borrowing in essential. This paper first sums up the relationship between culture and language is like that of content and form based on the previous research on the borrowing words. Then the history of cultural communication between China and West is divided into four periods to explore the influence of Chinese culture on the western culture. They are the periods before the beginning of 17th century, from early 17th century to the early 19th century, from the mid-19th century to early 20th century and from early 20th century to the present. Finally, it points out that the cultural causes of borrowing words are the historical developed culture of China and the compatibility of the British nation.
