用批评性语篇分析解读人际功能与话语权力的结合
Critical Discourse Analysis of the Combination
of Interpersonal Function and Discourse Power
Abstract
This paper uses George W. Bush’s Second Inaugural Speech as the research text and Halliday’s theory of interpersonal function to explore how George W. Bush, president of the United States, builds a bridge between the public audience and himself to enhance the discourse power of his speech. Besides, this paper focuses on the language features of the inaugural speech and tries to figure out how the president skillfully uses those features to serve his purpose.
It is of great significance for the public audience to understand the language skills frequently adopted by political figures in a public speech and get to know how the political figures establish an interpersonal relationship with the public, which serves to strengthen the discourse power of their speeches. I believe that a critical discourse analysis of the combination of interpersonal function and discourse power will facilitate a profound understanding of George W. Bush’s Second Inaugural Speech. Most importantly, it may raise people’s awareness of critical thinking and encourage people to rethink any political texts to conclude their own understandings.
