ON THE SYMBOLISM OF FLOWERS
IN SONS AND LOVERS
Abstract: Symbols make D. H. Lawrence’s novels, and there is no exception in Sons and Lovers. Lawrence uses so many symbols in his novels to express his thoughts. In Sons and Lovers, “Flowers” are main symbols in this novel. Different flowers stand for different meanings, which imply different personalities of the three heroes and suggest the development of affairs. To explore the flowers in the novel means the exploration of the heroes and understanding this novel. This paper analyzes the main flowers appearing around the dramatis personae. Through analyzing these symbolisms of flowers we can find the theme of this novel, the complicated relationships between the dramatis personas as well as the characters of dramatis personas.

论花在儿子与情人中的象征意义
摘 要:劳伦斯的小说中充满了象征意象,同样在小说《儿子与情人》中也有丰富的象征意象。在该小说中,劳伦斯运用大量的象征来表达自我的思想,其中“花”是该小说中主要的象征意象。不同的花代表不同的意义,“花”暗示了小说中三个主要的女主人公,暗示了小说事态的发展。对花的解读即是对小说的解读。本文通过分析出现在主人公身边的不同的花来进一步了解小说主人公的性格特点,主人公之间复杂的关系以及小说的主题。
