摘 要
威廉·福克纳是美国文学史上久负盛名的作家之一。在其著名的短篇小说《献给艾米莉的玫瑰》中,福克纳巧妙地运用了大量象征手法,通过艾米丽的爱情悲剧揭示了新旧观念的冲突,并在主人公悲惨的命运里赋予了强烈的情感和深远的社会内涵。本文首先介绍象征手法及其使用,然后通过对小说中人物、事物和事件的象征手法来深刻挖掘小说主旨以及背后的深层意蕴。最后,分析总结了象征手法给小说带来的重大意义。

ABSTRACT
William Faulkner is one of the most prominent writers in American literature. In his famous short story A Rose for Emily, by using ingenious symbolism, Faulkner revealed the clashes between the new values and the old ones in America through Emily’s love tragedy, furthermore, he endowed the heroine’s destiny with strong emotion and insightful social meaning. This paper first introduce symbolism and its uses, then explore the story’s theme and profound implication through symbolism about character, objects and events. It finally analyzes the great significance that symbolism brings to the story.
