Cultural Discrepancies in Interpreting: Example Analysis
& Possible Solutions
Abstract: With the rapid development of globalization, people from different parts of the world contact with each other for various purposes. Interpreting is a bridge for intercultural communication. However, the cultural discrepancies will influence or even hamper the communication in the process of interpreting. This paper begins with the definition and classification of interpreting, followed by the discussion of the relationship between language and culture, and then comes to some strategies on how to cope with the cultural discrepancies between Chinese and English. In intercultural communication, especially in interpreting, interpreters must have not only a solid command of both languages, but also a profound understanding of two languages’ cultural background.
