Abstract
David Copperfield is one of Charles Dickens’ world famous works. Many scholars pay attention to Dickens and his works from various aspects but few see the importance of motherhood for David. In fact, the growth of David had a tight connect to three females: his mother, his patron---Peggotty and his great-aunt Miss Betsey. They all played a role of mother for David, just David himself called Miss Betsey “my second mother”. Educators afirmly agreed that family education has a prefound influence on children’s growth. To David, he lucked of father’s love though he once had a step-father and his family education was accomplished by motherhood. Owing to education from these three women, David went through setbacks and succeeded at last both in career and marriage. In the first part, this paper makes a general introduction about David Copperfield and Dickens; then it is about literature review on this topic; the third and the fourth part are the key points which analyze how David was educated by these three women and what influences were made on his characters and senses of values. This paper tries to analyze David from family education to see how important motherhood is to a man’s success.
