Abstract
Wuthering Heights is a treasure in the world literature, which has the reputation of the most magnificent epic of love though it has received both criticism and praises since its publication. This paper is to make an analysis of the tragic fate of Heathcliff, the protagonist of Wuthering Heights by focusing on three different stages of his life, namely, his tragic childhood, tragic adulthood and tragic death, based on which three major underlying causes are explored, which include his internal deformed character, the external social inequality and oppression and his beloved Catherine’s betrayal of their love and relationship. The paper aims to add a different perspective to the research of the masterpiece, and arouses the social awareness of how a person would degenerate in nature, walks to devastation and end his life in tragedy due to various internal and external factors.
