Abstract
Hamlet is a great British dramatist and well-known tragic figure in Shakespeare's works. As a typical tragedy in Western drama, the causes of Hamlet's tragedy had always been divergent. The creation background of the works is the Renaissance period, and the core of the humanistic spirit as one of the themes of the Renaissance period is to put forward the idea of people-centered. By introducing Hamlet's character, this paper reveals the contradiction between humanitarianism and anti-humanitarianism, and the limitation of humanism itself. Different humanists have their own unique views on Hamlet. However, whatever the causes, the image of Hamlet is different. This paper makes an in-depth analysis of this work in order to put forward some humble opinions on the causes of Hamlet's tragedy. As the saying goes: a thousand readers have a thousand Hamlet, but for Shakespeare who is good at depicting all aspects of his personality incisively and vividly, Hamlet's personality can not be described by one or several simple adjectives. His personality is multifaceted and complex. The basic and indirect causes of Hamlet's tragedy are his own weakness and the influence of social reality.
