Abstract
Language is a part of culture and plays an important role in culture as long as it works. Some sociologists believe that language is the cornerstone of culture - without language, there is no culture. It can be said that language reflects the characteristics of a nation, it not only contains the history and cultural background of the nation, but also contains the nation's outlook on life, life style and way of thinking.
Idiom is a specific form of language or dialect of a people or country, which can reflect the living conditions and cultures. Idiom embodies the wisdom of the people, armed with a distinctive image, taken a strong ethnic color and local color which showing a colorful image of the form and culture, reflecting the various aspects of a national culture, including daily life, social customs, flora and fauna, and so on. Without idioms, language would become dull and dry, whereas an appropriate use of them in speech and writing will add much to variety strength and vividness of the language. This paper attempts to make a brief comparative study of the cultures differences embodied in Chinese and English idioms.
