Abstract
With the development of China’s economy, a growing number of British and American films, as carrier of culture, flush into the Chinese market and is loved by the majority of the audience. At this point,movie subtitles come into the public eye. Film subtitles translation is a new generation in the field of translation, thus, more and more experts and scholars have devoted their energies to study it and achieved good results. Film subtitle translation is an inevitable outcome of cross-cultural communication. It not only expresses the information of the film, interprets the theme of the film, but also helps to enhance the ornamental value of the film.Subtitle translation is a purposeful activity, mainly to convey the information of the film and television works, which make it easy for the audience in specific living environment to understand. Each movie has its specific purpose, therefore, subtitle translation should follow certain principles and adopt the appropriate translation strategy. In the translation process, the translator should also give attention to the cultural phenomenon. This paper aims to study the translation strategies guided by the theory of functional translation, starting from the definition of functional translation, and by introducing the features of film subtitle translation.
