Abstract
Children have the strongest learning desire and acceptability in their elementary learning stage, which is their prime time for second language acquisition. However, there exists some common problems in elementary English teaching, such as students’ passive class participation, tedious classroom atmosphere, monotonous teaching mode and unfavorable English learning ambiance, and “time-consuming with low efficiency” teaching situation, etc. The traditional teaching mode fails to arouse students’ interest and mobilize their proactivity in English learning and can’t serve well to foster their comprehensive English competency. What’s worse, it may form a vicious circle for their long-term English learning. On this ground, it’s imperative to reform teaching methods in compliance with elementary students’ psychological and cognitive characteristics. The story-telling teaching technique has been proved to be an effective means to tackle the existing teaching dilemma. Hence, the essay focuses on exploring how to apply the story-telling technique in elementary school English teaching and meanwhile analyzing its significance. And the essay will specifically take example of “what are you doing” in the PEP primary school grade 5 textbook with an aim to cast some thoughts upon actual application of the story-telling technique in elementary school English teaching. In addition, the adopted method of the research is to critically and objectively absorb, learn and get inspiration from excellent academic essays.
