Abstract
Listening is an important aspect of English learning and teaching. However, for students in rural middle schools, English listening classes are supposed to be very challenging because there are many obstacles in their listening comprehension. At present students’ principal obstacles that affect listening include: weak pronunciation recognition ability, limited vocabulary, poor understanding of grammar rule, lack of background knowledge, and so on. Thus it is essential to devote exclusively to the studying of how to improve listening comprehensive ability of rural students.
The thesis is divided into six parts. The first part is a brief introduction. The purpose and significance of the study are also proposed in this part. The second part defines the concept of listening comprehension, and emphasizes the importance of improving English listening comprehensive ability. In the third part, the English listening comprehensive ability of students of rural middle schools is investigated, and the obstacles in listening are found. The fourth part analyzes the principal listening obstacles and reasons behind them. The fifth part mainly provides some approaches to improving listening comprehensive ability. The last part draws the conclusion. It also points out some limitations of this study, and puts forward some prospects for future research.
It is expected that those suggestions above can provide some help for the English teachers who work in rural middle schools. Thus, students would achieve some significant progress in their English listening comprehensive ability, and increase their interests of learning English finally.
