Abstract
In recent years, the tourism industry of China develops rapidly. Meanwhile, the place names and scenic spot names translation play especially important roles in improving and optimizing the environment of our country’s foreign-related tourism. The translation of China scenic spot names affects the development of Chinese tourism and mutual communication between China and western culture. A good translated name is unforgettable and reflects cultural value well. The quality of translation texts still reflect the service quality and working attitude of employees in Chinese travel companies. So the translation of tourist attractions is especially important. However, lots of information is missed in the process of Chinese scenic spot name translation, and make the translation lead to lots of difficulties and misconceptions. The paper discusses the means of translation, principle and strategy of translation. It is suggested that translation should be consistent with real status of spots, and be accurate with no misleading errors. Bedsides, translators also are aware of cultural differences. Then the paper summarizes translating strategies based on the translation principles which are literal translation, liberal translation, transliteration, phonosemantic translation and Annotation. Each strategy is illustrated with examples as a support. Then a group of examples of spots in Hangzhou are chosen to further illustrate the principles and strategies above.
