A Contrastive Study of Chinese -Western Dinner Etiquettes
Abstract
With the rapid growth of the global economy, the international communication becomes more and more frequent, which amounts for the increasing cultural conflicts. In the global environment dinner plays a growing important part in the development of the world. However, the food is closely related to the culture, and different nations contribute to the various food cultures with the characteristics of nationalities and varieties .Such features are mainly reflected on the differences in the Chinese and western dinner etiquettes. Therefore, to have knowledge of the different dinner etiquettes plays an important role in intercultural communication .In this paper, the differences in Chinese and western dinner etiquettes are briefly introduced from three aspects: before the dinner, in the dinner, and after the dinner. Then the efforts are made to study the reasons why the differences exist in the Chinese and western dinner etiquettes from the Chinese and western time orientations, values and thoughts by means of comparison, analysis and quotation etc. From the paper, the conclusions can be made that there are various distinctions on the Chinese and western dinner etiquettes and some suggestions are made to improve the communication competence and to achieve the harmonious interaction by improving the toleration, developing empathy and learning about cultural adaption.
