ABSTRACT
This paper first explores the current situation in the name translation of the Chinese tertiary institutions from the perspectives of types and characteristics of naming, and indicates its overall great diversity, just as the old saying goes, “Let a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend”. It then explains three possible reasons for such chaos, and elaborates three problems (non-uniform wording, non-uniform structure and non-standard writing) with Zhejiang Province as examples. It finally makes a comparison with names of higher institutions in English-speaking countries and proposes some suggestions in light of the differences between Chinese culture and western culture, thus promoting our exchanges with the outside world.
