ABSTRACT
Translation is a cross-language and cross-cultural communicative behavior. In the process of translation, the most important task of translator is to convey the real intentions of source text to target text readers accurately, and achieve the communicative purpose of the original text. Speech Act Theory, as the first major theory in pragmatics, plays an important role in the practice of translation. Explaining the nature and purpose of translation from the perspective of Speech Act Theory not only demands that the translator should understand the literal meaning of utterances, but also know the illocutionary force of communication. Only in this way can the translator be loyal to source text. This thesis aims to analyze the English translation of classic Chinese novel Fortress Besieged from the perspective of Speech Act Theory and try to make a summary of the strategies the translators employed in order to present the novel to western readers under the circumstance of great cultural differences.
