THE SYMBOLISM OF RAIN IN A FAREWELL TO ARMS
Abstract: A Farewell to Arms is one of the masterpieces of Ernest Hemingway, the well-known American writer. In the novel, the writer used abundant symbols：mountain and plain, rain and snow, all carried on their specific symbolic meanings or indications, which were presented by the author in sharp contrast and helped to deepen the implied theme: life was a tragedy during the war, everything was destroyed by war. The use of symbolism in the novel is not by accident but out of intention from the author. The writer of this thesis will focus on the discussion of symbolism of rain in Ernest Hemingway’s A farewell to Arms.

摘 要： 《永别了，武器》是美国著名小说家:厄内斯特·海明威的极具代表性的巨作。在小说中，作家有了非常多的象征：高山、平原、雨水和雪都带有各自的象征意义，这些都以鲜明的对比、对照呈现在读者面前。这些象征深化了小说的主题：在战争年代中，生活是一个大悲剧，战争会摧毁一切。作家使用大量的象征绝非出于偶然，而是有意而为之。本论文作者将集中讨论厄内斯特·海明威的《永别了，武器》中的雨的象征。
