ON FIGURES OF SPEECH IN VANITY FAIR
Abstract: Vanity Fair written by William Makepeace Thackeray is generally recognized as his masterpiece, through which he established his important position in the history of English literature. This paper discusses the four major figures of speech in this classic. First, it examines the effects of satire through use of names and humorous situations. Second, it discusses irony in narration and characterization. Third, it explores how metaphor is used to build up characters. Finally, illustrates how contrasts perfect the structure of the novel. By analyzing the effects of four main figures of speech employed in the novel, the paper is intended to help readers appreciate this great novel.

摘 要：《名利场》是十九世纪英国著名小说家萨克雷的成名作，它奠定了萨克雷在英国文学史中的重要地位。本文主要探讨了小说中的四种修辞手法。首先，通过小说人名、地名的来源和一些幽默的场景来展现讽刺的精彩应用。其次，分析小说叙述和人物塑造上反语的应用。第三，讨论比喻在体现主、次人物个性方面的重要作用。最后分析小说中不同阶层之间的相互对比。本论文通过对修辞格的研究，旨在帮助读者更好地欣赏这部伟大的小说。
