Characteristics of and Approaches to English Movie Translation
A Case Study of Forrest Gump
Abstract:Based on understanding of the history of movie translation development and its research results, this paper gives definition of movie translation and its related implication, and points out that movie translation includes types of dubbing and subtitling. Movie translation language is considered to bear three characteristics, namely the restriction of mouth-type, different language forms and recipients. In view of it, this paper expounds six characteristics of film translation, namely, mouth-type translation, character-oriented translation, instantaneous translation, simplicity translation, cultural service translation and colloquial translation. In the process of summarizing these materials again, this paper bases on the American movie Forrest Gump to discuss the application of the above six characteristics and give some relevant examples in the movie.
