An Analysis of Scarlett’s Character in “Gone with the Wind”--

Abstract

Gone with the wind, one of the most popular novels in Europe and America, is a romantic story based of the background of American Civil War. Scarlett is a beautiful girl. She is willful and peacockish. Also Scarlett is a strong woman. When the war happened, Scarlett decided to go back to her hometown – Tara and took her rival in love Melanie and a newborn baby with her together. When she arrived home, her mother had died because of typhia fever, her father was in dementia, her homeland had been destroyed. For survival Scarlett became a family head. She started to do farm work. When faced to the threat of soldiers she killed them. When the war was over, lots of people could not face the reality, they can not bear having nothing. Scarlett became mercenaries and machiavellian. From this thesis, I want to analyze Scarlett’s personality when she faced to the war, the hunger and the survival.
