Abstract
George R. R. Martin is one of the most successful writers in the fiction and fantasy literature. Since the publication of his first short story in 1971, his works had gained more and more criticisms. The perspectives of fantastic elements, multiple-narrative methods and psychological analysis of Martin’s work get a lot of attention from the public. However, there have a few studies about Martin’s famous work A Song of Ice and Fire. Nurtured in western mythical literature, Martin uses mythology to make his works more vivid. Martin’s consciousness of mythology is the main factor that moves the readers deeply. This thesis wants to make a mythological archetypal study of Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire in order to find the relationship between A Song of Ice and Fire and the mythological archetypes and to probe into both the bright and dark sides of humanity. This thesis tries to adopt myth-archetypal theory, attempts a systematic and close examination of the archetypes appeared in the pages, including characters, motifs, and mythoi.
