Abstract
F.Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is rich in symbolism.He uses colors to symbolize the many different intangible ideas in the book. The moth, valley of ashes and The East and West Egg also have their symbolic meanings.
Fitzgerald's novel tells us the protagonist Gatsby who had the romantic, tragic, full of dramatic color of life. His novel reflected young people who pursuit and burst the "American Dream" in the vanity of pleasure and confusion loss of the Jazz Age. In the novel, the author heavyly use the symbolism to express its profound artistic ideas and themes. The symbolism not only enriched the connotation of the article,but also profoundly revealed the theme, It reflected the author's mature artistic skills.
In this paper, Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby provides a brief introduction. It pointed out that the use of symbol in The Great Gatsby. It analyzes symbolic use in three colors.They are the green, yellow and white. Finally, it proposed the conclusion and summarize the full text.
