Abstract
Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece by Jane Austen. Austen has been considered as one of the novelists on Romantic period in the history of British literature. There are four different kinds of marriage depicted in this novel, which are respectively established on virtues, true love, sex impulse, and money. Nevertheless, if readers read it more carefully, they will discover a fact that each of the marriage pattern is backed by the fortune.
The thesis studies Jane Austen’s attitude about marriage through her novel Pride and Prejudice. This thesis includes three parts. The first part is a general introduction to Jane Austen and the novel Pride and Prejudice. The second part is to discuss the four kinds of marriage in detail. At the beginning of the second part, it studies the marriage of Charlotte and Collins, which is usually established on money; Next, it discusses the marriage of Lydia and Wickham, which is diagnosed as the tragic marriage in the author's opinion; Thirdly, it studies marriage of Jane and Mr. Bingley which is established on virtues; Fourth, it studies marriage of Darcy and Elizabeth which is regarded as the happiest marriage patterns in people's eyes. In the third part, the thesis discusses Jane Austen’s marriage construction theories. The theories which will explain the different endings and reasons of the happy marriage or the tragic marriage in Pride and Prejudice.
