Abstract
The study on the relationship between culture and higher education is an important subject. Some issues on higher education need to be discussed from the culture point of view. Higher education, especially the English learning of higher education was greatly influenced by the culture evolution in China. The development of English leaning of higher education in the earlier modern China has undergone tortuous change during the culture evolution, which was the result of the eastern and western cultural communication and amalgamation.
Culture and English education in the earlier modern China are dialectically interactive. The culture evolution which was caused by “the introduction of western learning into China” greatly changed the values, thinking way and psychological structure of the people, and then influenced every aspects of the English learning of higher education, such as English education ideology, system, teachers, curriculum, and teaching method.
The study of “the English learning of higher education in the earlier modern China” is on the basis of history as well as the combination of historical facts and discussion. It provides the condition, experiences as well as the lessons of the English learning of higher education in the earlier modern China. The history can reflect a lot of useful things, many practices of English leaning in the past are still very valuable in the modern times, such as pay attention to the translation practices, learn the language with the sciences, emphasize the impetus to the social development of the language learning.
