Abstract
Translation is a sort of intercultural communication, like a bridge linking two cultures. However, Culture-loaded words always impede these communications. They are words and expressions that carry with them unique cultural connotations of a source language. Those words indicate a certain nation’s unique behaves and manners which are different from other nations. Our literary works, especially Lu xun’s novel, always contain a great number of culture-loaded words, which make it difficult for translators to find read-made and equivalent expressions when they try to translate them. This paper covers the definition, characteristics, principles, and methods of translating culture-loaded words. Then, taking the English Translation versions of Lu Xun’s novel collection Call to arms as an example, the paper is a tentative study of the regulative translation principles and methods of culture-loaded words, and the translation of culture-loaded words in Lu Xun’s works, basically based on Yangs’s Translation version. According to the analysis, the author finds that Yangs mainly adopt the strategy of foreignization and domestication is used as a necessary but complementary or subsidiary strategy. It is expected that these findings may be helpful to translators in transferring cultures efficiently through translating culture-loaded words.
