Abstract
Vocabulary is one of the three building materials in language. The core of language learning is to make sure the smooth communication with each other. Without vocabulary, language will lose its practical significance. If the grammar is finite, then the vocabulary is infinite. Since the vocabulary learning and grasping is a continuous and gradual process, it is one of the biggest obstacles in English teaching and learning. Mastering and using vocabulary directly affects students’ listening, reading, writing, translation, and other skills. Lacking a great amount of vocabulary, the comprehension and expression will become ambiguity, and disorder, respectively. If the students correct master more vocabulary and reading rate is higher, the level of their listening and writing also increased. Therefore, vocabulary teaching plays an important role in language teaching.
Because the college entrance examination is the final test for students in high school learning. Teachers and students pay more attentions to this final examination. Since the mode, types, contents, ways and means of the examination are the same year after year, with few changes, they totally understand the outline, rules of the examination. Thus they always follow this principle: any knowledge and language points appeared in textbook must be mastered. As a result, the spent most time to learn the finite language knowledge and the content again and again. The vocabulary that students studied is limited to the textbooks. The importance of context is also ignored, which allows students to recited the words, but don’t know how to use the words, they are abused. This article provides some English vocabulary teaching methods. They should also make full use of class time, help students to master the use of the words they have learned.
