Abstract
Body language is an important part of communication, just like verbal language, is also a part of culture. It takes a role to help people transfer information and improve human communication ,which is an indispensable power to break up language obstacles in intercultural communication. Put simply, it helps us express ourselves and understand others.
Statistics shows that body language has been comprehensively studied since the 1950s. The research findings have been widely applied in the fields of politics, diplomacy, cultural exchange, business, and even among common people. However, With the deepening of international economic and cultural exchanges,there appear more obstacles caused by the differences of language and culture.Body language from different cultures has many difference because of regions,races and cultural customs,even if same body language has different meaning in different cultures and social functions. So that the research and popularization of body language need further promoting and enhancing.
This paper mainly expounds the definition,classification,functions and importance, highlighting the differences among cultures and the problems with regard to body language, presents the meanings of body language in different cultures from the point of cultures.Analyzing it based on the existing research findings, its classifications and the writer’s own knowledge in the field for the purpose of providing some solutions to the problems.
The paper also aims to illustrate the differences and similarities of body language and put forward the principle of reducing barriers in intercultural communication so that people can achieve efficient communication and avoid misunderstanding.
