Abstract
Jane Austen (1775 - 1817) is an English novelist who lived at the turn of the 18th and 19th century. Her first novel《Sense and Sensibility》had been published in 1811. From the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century, " sentimental literature" and " gothic novel" flooded the British literary world. " Sentimental literature" shows the dissatisfaction of the social reality of the contradiction, and also reflects the resistance of the rationalism and classicism advocated by the aristocracy. " Gothic novel" focus on the gothic related architecture, art, poetry ( see the cemetery poet ) and even gardening. But Austen’s novels set up new ones, showing the daily life and pastoral scenery of the British rural middle class, which had not yet been hit by the capitalist industrial revolution dealing with country landed gentry. Her work focuses on the marriage and life of the country's rural gentry, and depicts the world around her with her unique, nuanced observations and lively and witty words. Houses, money, estates run like an undercurrent through many of her novels. Although the scope and depth of her works is limited, her novels inheriting and developing the excellent realistic tradition in Britain in the 18th century, preparing for the climax of realistic novels in the 19th century, and playing an important role in changing the vulgar culture in the novels at that time.
