Abstract
Thomas Hardy was a famous British novelist and poet during the transition from the 19th century to 20th century.He was also one of the representative writers of critical realism.His most accomplish work consisted of a series called “Wessex novels”.Tess of d’ Urbervilles was a masterpiece of “Wessex novels”.This work describes the tragic and short life of Tess who was a pure farm woman.Tess who was so full of hope for life.She was brave to sacrifice herself to protect her family, resistance and struggle against feudalism and bourgeois morality, religion and social oppression.But she suffers all kinds of misfortunes in pursuit of beautiful love.The author is strongly sympathetic to the encounter of protagonist Tess and attracted by distinctive of her characters.Tess’s characters mainly include fogyism, pure, resistance. As Tess who was a farm woman so she kept the fogyism character as compromise, narrowness, credulous, deep moral sensitivity.Meanwhile, she also was pure as innocent, diligent, honest, loyal, responsible. However, she made resistance for her life. She was brave and strong. The factors that influence the forming of these characters include social factors, family factors, and personal factors. Personality determines her fate and destined to her tragic fate. This paper will analyse the forming of Tess' s character through these factors and personalities influence on Tess’ s tragedy.For this reason, there will have a more in-depth understanding that Tess and the process of tragedy.
